Fox Surfer X hits Durban

Durban - Now entering it’s fourth year and a highlight of the South African action sports event calendar, the Fox Surfer X is set to invade both the racetrack and the sea this weekend as top surf and motocross pros from around the country head to Durban.

Co-sponsored by Monster Energy and PS3, Surfer X pays homage to the cross-over phenomenon, celebrating common ground shared by all action sports athletes, regardless of whether they’re powered by petrol or ocean swell.

A unique contest format sees entrants competing in both a surf contest on the Durban coast and an MX race around the Springfield dirt track.

A change in format intended to raise the bar sees the specialists separated from the all rounders, with three groups competing: Main Class, Pro Surf Class and Pro MX Class. Points are awarded based on positions in the two contests and added together for a final ranking.

The competitor with the most points wins the overall title and the lion’s share of R20 000 in prize money. And more importantly, bragging rights until next year.

First up will be the surf leg, held at Dairy Beach on Saturday August 14. Starting at 9am, a moderate swell with a good direction and favorable winds should provide ideal conditions for the racers to get wet and perfect canvases for the pros to dominate.

All spectators are welcome to join the action on Durban’s newly renovated Golden Mile.

Favourites to look out for are Shane Thorne, Casey Grant, Kyle Beach, Matt Kruger, Brad Swanepoel, Allan Johns, Hayden MacNicol and Chad Schwabb, who will be at home in the lefts of Dairy Bowl and looking to muster an early lead in the ratings.

From the beach to the berms and tabletops of Springfield racetrack as the battle shifts into gear and onto the dirt.

On Sunday August 15 Pro MX entrants Ricky Sneddon, Simon Bak, Dean Hey, Michael Morgan, Brett Gouvaue, Brad Woodroff and Brett Sturgeon will be looking to make up any poor performances in the water but the real action will be coming from the Main Class.

These are the competitors who excel in both divisions and will be jostling for as many points as possible.

Last years winner Clint Dreyer will be looking to defend his title while previous winners Wes O’Driscoll and Darren Bunyan will be hoping to add a second trophy to the mantle.

Other contenders include last years runner up Gavin Frost not to mention Gregg Mundy and Jonno Venter. Any one of them has the skill and experience to end up on the top of the podium.

Entrance to the track is free for all spectators with a practice session starting at 10am and the racing starting at 11am. Everyone is invited to come and join a day of sunshine and flat out racing.
