JoMoPro 2010

Well, it's finished. Another JoMoPro is in the record books, and the riding was insane. Though I had seen videos of the past few years, this was my first time actually getting on a plane and going to the comp, and the only thing I can complain about is the three-hour drive from the airport to Joplin, Missouri, home of the Autumn Ramp Park, The Foundry and JoMoPro.

Things got heated early on, with ladies park finals going down on Friday night. Nina Buitrago grabbed the win, pulling smooth nothings over the box, wallrides and more, followed by Lauren Vellucci in second and Jessica Ausec in third. It should go without saying that the entire ladies class shredded, but what really amazed me was how fast the entire field of women riders is progressing. And not just tricks; they're taking the correct steps to learn how to flow skateparks, pull rollbacks and get the basics down before trying tailwhips, and that's pretty respectable. Look for the ladies class to continue stepping it up throughout the year.

Pro park and flatland qualifying got underway on Saturday, and things heated up pretty early. Although I was judging park qualifying, I did manage to sneak some time into watching pro flatland, and the talk of the weekend was directed at the return of Trevor Meyer.

Trevor was unstoppable through the late '90s and early '00s, but disappeared from the scene a few years back. He didn't stop riding, but he no longer competed. That changed this weekend. Sporting a 21" top tube Sick Child, Trevor returned to the competitive flatland scene, pulling front and back wheel brakeless links, in addition to a cross-footed bar ride.

In park qualifying, all 54 riders shredded. I could spend all day listing off tricks and lines, or I could instead say that the entire pro class had their thoughts with the 2009 JoMo winner Josh Perry, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and is scheduled for surgery later this week. I think every rider in the pro class was rocking a "Resist/Recover/Ride" sticker on their helmet, ultimately doing it for Josh. In the end, DK's Drew Bezanson qualified first, followed by Chris Hughes and Ben Voyles.
